Why Ride?

Our Passion For Curing Breast Cancer

Peg Carey, the mother of our founder Jennifer Carey, was diagnosed with breast cancer. After several lumpectomies and a mastectomy, she is now cancer free!  Jennifer attributes her mom beating cancer to her ability to fight and to the doctors who were able to diagnose her condition early and treat it effectively.

While helping her mom recover, Jennifer wanted to give back to organizations that were instrumental in the research for developing breast cancer treatments. Jennifer decided to do the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk in 2009 and continues to do it each year until there is a cure for breast cancer. 2009 was the first of many 3-Day walks for Jennifer and the beginning of her breast cancer fundraising efforts.

Fundraising as an individual is very challenging, Jennifer asked a friend, Paul who is an avid cyclist, if he would help create a fundraising bike ride. Paul is a bit irreverent, but he understood that people like to contribute while having fun. The Boob Ride was born as a grassroots effort in 2010 as “Biking4Boobs” with just 35 riders, and it has nearly doubled in size every year since then. In 2015, we added two other rides, including one in San Diego and one in St. Peter’s Village in Pennsylvania.

The Boob Ride

We began this little grass roots effort in 2010 to support Jennifer’s Susan G. Komen 3Day walk fundraising efforts. Paul Self, a co-worker at the time, tapped into the cycling community to create a fun ride from Irvine to Solana Beach, California. We informally called the event Biking4Boobs. This is a great route along the coast followed by a party at the Pizza Port, some funny awards, and then catch the train home. We transported the bikes back while the riders napped on the train.

Seven years later with rapid year-over-year growth, the event has taken on a life of its own. In 2015 we started The Boob Ride San Diego and The Boob Ride Pennsylvania

In late 2015 we created the FUN 4 GOOD corporate umbrella, rebranded as The Boob Ride®, obtained the trademark, and shifted into a higher gear.

2016 added Marianne Masterson’s Team STRIDE to our San Diego team. Their efforts in San Diego are quickly being realized and we have great expectations for this event.

FUN4GOOD

In 2015 we created FUN 4 GOOD, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit as an umbrella organization to produce fun events for good causes. Our events and operational needs grew to the point that we needed an umbrella company. We are an all volunteer organization, which means no one is on payroll.

100% of rider registration fees go to the cause. Sponsorship and other revenue sources are used for operations and marketing, with the bulk of these funds going to the cause as well.

In our early years, we were primarily supporting our founder’s walking team on the Susan G. Komen 3Day San Diego Walk. While we continue to support this great organization, FUN4GOOD is in the planning stages of a foundation that can direct funds to low income people for breast cancer screening, treatments and transportation to medical treatment. Our vision is to leverage the Susan G. Komen organization, while directly impacting the local need for breast cancer treatment and research.

Our next significant cause is colon cancer. Dayna Hinsley is a co-founder of FUN4GOOD and has been battling colon cancer for many years. There are many fun ideas being floated for events to battle this horrible cancer. Stay tuned for opportunities to become involved.
